Using generative AI to transform production with Volkswagen Group and AWS
Volkswagen Group is using generative artificial intelligence (AI) on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to streamline maintenance, cut development and operational costs, and rapidly scale AI-driven tools across its production network worldwide.
Overview
One of the world’s largest automakers with more than 100 plants globally, Volkswagen Group is using Amazon Bedrock to modernize production and accelerate problem solving on the shop floor. Its maintenance chatbot reduces downtime by giving technicians instant access to technical data, while the Genius platform provides scalable AI tools across manufacturing. Stefan Krawinkel, head of generative AI at Volkswagen Production, says the company’s goal is to democratize AI so every employee can build and use their own intelligent assistants.
About the Volkswagen Group
The Volkswagen Group is one of the world’s leading car makers and the largest car manufacturer in Europe. With more than 650,000 employees, it operates 120 factory sites around the globe producing vehicles across brands including Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche.
Scaling AI to scale global production
Volkswagen Group, a global manufacturer with over 660,000 employees and nearly 9 million vehicles sold in 2025, is harnessing generative AI on AWS to strengthen and scale innovation across its production network. A key example of this is its maintenance chatbot, which gives teams instant access to technical data, helping them diagnose issues faster and cut downtime.
The chatbot is part of a broader initiative called Genius, Volkswagen Group’s central generative AI platform. Running on the Digital Production Platform (DPP) co-developed with AWS, Genius uses services such as Amazon Bedrock, AWS Lambda, Amazon Neptune, and AWS Textract to deploy AI securely across plants. “The impact of Genius on AWS is quite impressive,” says Krawinkel. “We’ve been able to reduce development and operational costs as well as speed deployment times. We rolled out the maintenance chatbot to 8 plants in 3 weeks—that was a huge success.”
Democratizing AI safely with AWS
Volkswagen Group’s vision for Genius is a unified AI platform that brings together generative, analytical, and physical AI—a three‑pillar approach designed to create a fully AI‑driven production environment capable of powering global manufacturing. “With Genius, we don’t just want to supply developers with the toolkits of AWS services, but we also want to give our employees artificial intelligence in their hands,” says Krawinkel.
To scale this vision responsibly, Amazon Bedrock provides a controlled environment where Volkswagen Group can test and refine AI models, while the DPP adds the governance and security needed to deploy them with confidence across production sites. Genius is further strengthened by centralized, trusted data management through Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio, ensuring reliable data flows into AI agents and applications.
Together, these foundations enable safe, self‑service AI capabilities for employees across production and logistics—empowering them to build their own agents and integrate AI directly into daily workflows. As Krawinkel says, “This provides Genius with trusted data so that we can use it to give value to our customers.”
